Speed in knots graph

The kids love this simple way of working out your boat speed by timing an object as it slides past.  If you have a known distance, like the length of your boat, all you do is position someone in the bow to shout 'NOW' as a clump of seaweed or whatever passes the start point and someone else times it to the end point.  Then just look on the graph to read your speed.

Counting in seconds takes a little practice to be accurate.  The method that works well for me is 'I reckon that's one, I reckon that's two, I reckon that's three' etc (said almost as quickly as you can).  I find it very accurate and handy for timing lights at night.
